Solar energy materials can be of many kinds, for example, metallic, semiconducting, dielectric, glassy, polymeric, gaseous, etc. In particular, thin surface coatings of solar energy materials may exhibit the desired properties in their own right or may yield such properties when backed by an appropriate substrate.
The journey of solar panel technology has placed a big spotlight on solar cell components. These parts are key in the quest for more energy efficiency. Silicon is the top choice for best materials for solar panels, taking up 95% of the market. Its success is due to its durability and power output, lasting over 25 years and keeping 80% efficiency.
Some alternative materials remain in the early stages of research and development but others are already in use. For example, cadmium telluride solar cells are produced commercially and cost about the same as crystalline silicon cells. US generation of electricity from solar energy could grow six-fold by 2050.
For example, cadmium telluride cells and copper indium gallium diselinide cells together account for roughly 10 percent of current solar cells and they are already cost-competitive with crystalline silicon cells. Novel solar cells under development use a variety of materials.
Promising materials in this context include organic/polymer compounds, colloidal quantum dots, and nanostructured perovskites. The development of new materials utilized in active layers for solar cells has been a topic of interest for researchers, such as organic materials, polymer materials, colloidal quantum dots, and perovskites.
Materials like Cadmium Telluride (CdTe) and Copper Indium Gallium Diselenide (CIGS) are leading the way. They offer more efficient and cheaper options for harnessing sunlight. Since the first solar cell in 1954, silicon ruled the market. But, CdTe photovoltaics are now a strong competitor. CdTe layers are very thin and great at absorbing sunlight.
