In many off-grid and edge-of-grid power systems, solar PV offers a cost-effective form of generation that can support and/or largely replace existing conventional generation. These power systems typically include a combination of PV, BESS and conventional generation.
This implies that investment in off-grid PV power is already feasible from a financial and climate perspective for communities located further than 19 km and 28 km from the grid, the respective distances for mountainous and plains terrain at which the MAC becomes negative and therefore economically favourable.
Off-grid and edge-of-grid power systems have increased in prevalence and complexity over the past several decades as the cost of solar PV, and now energy storage, has dropped substantially. With the maturation of the off-grid and edge-of-grid power market, investors have also become more savvy.
The current high cost of useable off-grid PV electricity is due mainly to two factors: the need for expensive storage as a result of the mismatch between generation and demand and the dumping of a large fraction of the generated energy.
