According to the US Department of Energy (DOE), about 12% of all silicon metal produced worldwide (also known as “metallurgical-grade silicon” or MGS) is turned into polysilicon for solar panel production. China produces about 70% of the world’s MGS and 77% of the world’s polysilicon.
The US solar industry aims to supply 30% of US energy generation by 2030. But manufacturing the solar panels necessary for such a huge increase in solar power production will require a surge in the mining of raw materials. There are myriad problems that exist with the mining of silicon, silver, aluminum, and copper needed to make solar panels.
Silicon metal has historically been used in the photovoltaic industry because of the ability to control its conductivity through doping. It is estimated that in 2012 Europe’s consumption of silicon metal was 540 000 tonnes which made Europe the second biggest consumer after China (Oakdene Hollins and Fraunhofer ISI, 2013).
“Silicon recovered from end-of-life solar panels can be a massive, sustainable source of nano-silicon to meet future demand for raw battery materials. Helping to power the homes, transport and communities of the future.”
Silicon is used in semiconductor chips as well as solar panels. “There is an underappreciation about what needs to happen in mining,” says Demetrios Papathanasiou, global director for energy and extractives at the World Bank.
In the EU silicon metal is used in the chemical sector (54 %) and for the production of aluminium. The silicon-based PV industry requires 15- 20 tonnes of silicon feedstock to generate 1 MWp, depending on the PV technology (Sarti and Einhaus, 2002). China is the major producer of silicon metal, accounting for 56 % of global production.
