The vast deployment of EVs as private and commercial vehicles has created a major challenge for the grids in maintaining the power quality and peak load demand. This study, therefore, reviews the various battery charging schemes (battery charger) and their impact when used in EV and Hybrid EV applications.
Cable charging standard GB/T 27930 is based on the SAE J1939 network protocol and uses the CAN bus with a point-to-point connection between the charger and the battery management system (BMS). China and Japan are developing a new version of GB/T fast charging standard (Being referred to as Chaoji).
At the moment, the charging capacity for individual vehicles is managed via the basic charging standard IEC 61851, which allows a charge point to set a maximum current level for charging. This standard only transmits the real-time limit at a given moment and does not allow communication to schedule loads at other times.
This is needed for the EV and charging station to agree on a charging schedule that serves the needs of the EV driver and the electricity grid. Technical standards enable such communication. All European public charging stations currently operate using the IEC 61851:2019 standard to connect to vehicles.
The charging potential/level for the battery charger is based on the charging modes, converter rating, battery pack etc. The chargers are categorised in the three modes/levels according to the supply voltages and application power ratings. Table 2 discusses the available charging modes.
Let’s dive into the standards making smart charging possible. For smart charging to work, the different actors within the electromobility ecosystem have to be able to communicate information on pricing, electricity needs and availability of EV charging stations to match demand and supply.
