A solid-state battery is an electrical battery that uses a solid electrolyte for ionic conductions between the electrodes, instead of the liquid or gel polymer electrolytes found in conventional batteries. Solid-state batteries theoretically offer much higher energy density than the typical lithium-ion or lithium polymer batteries.
The earliest thin-film solid-state batteries is found by Keiichi Kanehori in 1986, which is based on the Li electrolyte. However, at that time, the technology was insufficient to power larger electronic devices so it was not fully developed. During recent years, there has been much research in the field.
2. Solid Electrolytes: The Heart of Solid-State Batteries The gradual shift to solid electrolytes has been influenced by the prior development of conventional lithium (Li) batteries, which have traditionally employed liquid electrolytes.
Both researchers and electric car manufacturers consider solid-state batteries to be the super battery of the future. Most recently, Toyota has announced that they expect to launch an electric car with a lithium solid-state battery in 2027-28.
The solid-state design of SSBs leads to a reduction in the total weight and volume of the battery, eliminating the need for certain safety features required in liquid electrolyte lithium-ion batteries (LE-LIBs), such as separators and thermal management systems [3, 19].
In early 2022, Swiss Clean Battery (SCB) announced plans to open the world's first factory for sustainable solid-state batteries in Frauenfeld by 2024 with an initial annual production of 1.2 GWh. In July 2022, Svolt announced the production of a 20 Ah electric battery with an energy density of 350-400 Wh/kg.
The Future of Lithium-Ion and Solid-State Batteries
Solid-state battery technology incorporates solid metal electrodes as well as a solid electrolyte. Although the chemistry is generally the same, solid-state designs avoid leakage and corrosion at the electrodes, which reduces the risk of fire and lowers design costs because it eliminates the need for safety features.
