BUT trying to operate a 12V rated device from a 16V supply (25% high) is risky and may cause damage to device or supply. Current: the same or higher current. eg consider a 12V, 2A device and a 12V 20A power supply. 12V is the "electrical pressure". 20A is the electrical current that the supply CAN provide at that pressure.
Power supply size guides are based on wattage ratings which indicate the amount of electrical power they can provide. Typically, power supplies range from 1W all the way up to 30,000W. The size of each power supply will correlate to its wattage rating, with higher wattage ratings requiring larger power supplies.
All supplies have some maximum current they can provide and still stick to the remaining specs. For a "12 volt 1 amp" supply, that means all is fine as long as you don't try to draw more than the rated 1 A. There are various things a supply can do if you try to exceed the 1 A rating. It could simply blow a fuse.
This power is broken down into 3 voltages: 12V, 5V, and 3.3V. Different components in your computer will use different voltages; however, it is important to note that most modern computers receive roughly 80-90% of their power from the 12V and thus most modern power supplies send the majority of their power across the 12V rail (s).
A 9 volt 5 amp supply is a superset of a 9 volt 2 amp supply, for example. If you are replacing a previous power supply and don't know the device's requirements, then consider that power supply's rating to be the device's requirements.
See an example of this highlighted from our Product Page for the 12V 2Amp DC Power Supply, seen in the image below. To explain further 12V DC means it will Output 12 Volts of Direct Current to a project. The 2A means it will Output a Maximum of 2 Amps of electrical current to a project.

Before charging a 12V battery with a power supply, it is essential to identify the battery type. Two common types of 12V batteries are lead-acid and lithium-ion batteries. Lead-acid batteries are commonly used in cars, trucks, and boats, while lithium-ion batteries are commonly used in portable electronic devices and electric vehicles.
With USB only (no power supply), current consumption is 35 mA. This was measured with a DMM after fuse F1 was removed (the DMM measures in series with the fuse). With both the 9V power supply and USB plugged in the current consumption is 35mA from the power supply only. So it looks like the FT232 does enter into a partial shutdown ...
In a nutshell, the Amps rating on a power supply, charger or adapter explains the maximum amount of current that it can safely provide in an hour. Any amperage of charger rated above what''s required for your device is …
Power supplies go by a lot of different names, you can call them Wall Warts, AC Adapters, Plugpacks, or AC/DC Converters, whatever takes your fancy. Below are my three generalised golden rules for selecting a power …
Lithium batteries can last for thousands of cycles. But as batteries are used and charged more, they hold less charge capacity. After about 500 cycles, a lead-acid battery will lose about 20% of its capacity, while a lithium battery will 20% of its capacity after about 2000 cycles. Check your battery''s data sheet for more accurate numbers.
Any device will only draw as much current as it needs, so long as its power source can supply it. However, the laptop adapter''s voltage is a full volt above …
Get a power supply at minimum the rated current. If the device says 500 mA, get a power supply that can deliver at least that. A 100 mA wall wart may overheat and set your house on fire if not properly protected. A 1000 mA is safe, even if you only need 500 mA. Olin explained with fruit, I''ll try to explain with another flow: water. If my ...
Power supplies, like the name implies, are the primary supplier of power to your motherboard. They do this by converting the high voltage alternating current (AC) that comes out of the wall...
You can also use the power supply calculator to estimate your computer''s power needs based on its components. Next, make sure your PSU fits your PC case. Every PC case has a specific spot for the power supply unit, but the size and shape of this space can vary. Decide on a form factor to help you pick a compatible PSU.
Basic 5 Volt Power Supply: The first part of any electronics project, is a power supply. Some projects use the USB port on your computer; others use a cheap wall adapter. Some are battery powered, and others are solar. With all these …
In a nutshell, the Amps rating on a power supply, charger or adapter explains the maximum amount of current that it can safely provide in an hour. Any amperage of charger rated above what''s required for your device is safe to use with your device, providing the PSU voltage is the same as the input voltage or within a tolerance of 1 volt.
On average a well designed switching power supply should have a reasonable power factor, being mostly resistive and with a fairly small reactive portion varying depending …
DC Voltage - Output Voltage is rating of your battery system, usually a single 12 volt battery. We use 12.5 volts for 12 volt battery systems. Example: DC Amperage - Now we know that our application uses 36 watts of total power. If you take this power from a 12.5 VDC source, then the total amperage required increases to 3.31 Amps (or 3,310 mAH ...

On average a well designed switching power supply should have a reasonable power factor, being mostly resistive and with a fairly small reactive portion varying depending upon load. The only way to really tell would be to measure it with a power factor meter under varying real world conditions.
