The implemented circuit consists of a 60 W photovoltaic (PV) module, a buck converter with an MPPT controller, and a 13.5V-48Ah battery. The performance of the solar charge controller is increased by operating the PV module at the maximum power point (MPP) using a modified incremental conductance (IC) MPPT algorithm.
The MPPT charge controller jumped all over it and started pulling more power from that panel. A traditional charge controller would have struggled and not been able to adjust like that. This illustrates why you need an MPPT charge controller on a solar panel. There's so much more that this custom PCB can do.
Basically, there are two methods of controlling the charging current: series regulation and parallel (shunt) regulation. A series regulator is inserted between the solar panel and the battery. PWM type is an advanced version of an on/off type solar charge controller. A PWM signal is used to control the switching rather than direct on/off. This type of charge controller is a little better than the on/off type charge controller but still can not use the maximum generated power.
The circuit of the solar charge controller is shown in Fig.1. It comprises microcontroller AT89C2051, serial analogue-to-digital converter ADC0831, optocoupler MCT2E, regulator 7805, MOSFETs BS170 and IRF540N, transistor BC547, LCD and a few discrete components. Component description is given below.
