Compressed air energy storage (CAES) is a promising energy storage technology due to its cleanness, high efficiency, low cost, and long service life. This paper surveys state-of-the-art technologies of CAES, and makes endeavors to demonstrate the fundamental principles, classifications and operation modes of CAES.

The results demonstrate that electricity storage efficiency, round-trip efficiency, and exergy efficiency can reach 70.2%, 61%, and 50%, respectively. Therefore, the proposed system has promising prospects in cities with abundant solar resources owing to its high efficiency and the ability to jointly supply multiple energy needs. 1. Introduction
Adiabatic compressed air energy storage (A-CAES) is an effective balancing technique for the integration of renewables and peak-shaving due to the large capacity, high efficiency, and low carbon use. Increasing the inlet air temperature of turbine and reducing the compressor power consumption are essential to improving the efficiency of A-CAES.
Solar energy is introduced to heat the high-pressure air from the air storage cavern to improve the turbine inlet air temperature. An ORC was introduced to recover the heat carried by the air-turbine exhaust.
When charging the storage system, air is compressed using electricity and stored in compressed air cylinders at up to 300 bar. Compression produces heat at a temperature of up to 60°C, which can be used for heating buildings, generating hot water or as industrial process heat.
