Chinese solar installations are still forecast to be fairly high this year, despite the glut. The CPIA said Thursday that it was expecting 190 to 220 gigawatts of new capacity in China this year, unchanged from a forecast in February. That compares with a record 217 gigawatts in 2023.
Photographer: Qilai Shen/Bloomberg (Qilai Shen/Bloomberg) (Bloomberg) -- China should push struggling solar manufacturers to exit the market as soon as possible to reduce severe overcapacity in a sector that’s vital to the energy transition, according to a major industry group.
According to the administration, rural areas in China that have the potential to install PV panels on roofs cover approximately 27.3 billion square meters, and there's huge potential for further development. Although distributed PV slightly surpassed centralized large-area PV in capacity, the latter's growth was faster, the CPIA said.
China’s solar photovoltaic (PV) industry’s protracted battle with overcapacity may be drawing to a close, after years of bruising price wars and rapid capacity build-up plunged half the sector into the red, forcing closures and disrupting expansion plans, analysts say.
“If these are all true, it will send a positive signal to the solar PV industry, as such policies will suppress the continued decline of solar PV prices,” said Lin Boqiang, dean of Xiamen University’s China Institute for Studies in Energy Policy.
