Italian electricity utilities are strongly involved in the PV sector and in innovative projects. Public Administration owns, at the end of 2021, 19.583 PV plants, for a capacity of 805 MW (3,6% of the total capacity installed in Italy). At the end of 2021, 74% of Italian municipalities owns at least one PV plant installed.
PV electricity production reached 23.689 GWh, with a growth compared to the previous year (+4,6%) mainly due to better irradiation conditions. Out of the 23.689 GWh produced in Italy in 2019, 52% is generated by the industrial sector, 20% by the tertiary sector, 15% by the domestic sector and 13% by the agricultural sector.

A PV system consists of modules, inverters, batteries and all installation and control components for modules, inverters and batteries.
Italy has registered a seven-fold increase in the number of photovoltaic systems since 2010, reaching over 1.2 million in 2022. That year, Lombardy and Veneto were the regions contributing the most to this sector’s growth. Together, they account for over 30 percent of the PV installed capacity in the country.
All 2022 figures show the important growth of PV market in Italy. The total number of PV plants grew by 20,5% compared to 2021, the cumulative capacity of 10,9% and PV production in 2022 grew by 12,5% compared to 2021.
