Hazardous conditions due to low-temperature charging or operation can be mitigated in large ESS battery designs by including a sensing logic that determines the temperature of the battery and provides heat to the battery and cells until it reaches a value that would be safe for charge as recommended by the battery manufacturer.
High and low temperatures can lead to different unsafe conditions in Li-ion cells and batteries. High temperatures can lead to decomposition of the electrolyte and the solid-electrolyte interface (SEI) layer, destabilization of the cathode and anode that eventually lead to a violent venting, fire, and thermal runaway.
Low temperatures will lead to an increase in battery internal resistance, thus limiting the LIBs' discharge power . Conversely, high temperatures can instigate side reactions within the LIB, further resulting in the performance degradation and the thermal runaway's risk .
The battery temperatures at positions 15 and 16 are lower because the cooler coolant at the inlet, while flowing through the main channel, is also distributed earlier to the other side of the baffle through the FPs on the baffle. As the output ratio increases, the battery temperatures continuously decrease.
To address this issue, it is typically recommended to maintain the operating temperature range of LIBs between 20 °C and 40 °C, with a maximum temperature difference (ΔTmax) ranging from 0 °C to 5 °C [4, 5]. Low temperatures will lead to an increase in battery internal resistance, thus limiting the LIBs' discharge power .
Prior to the experiment, the battery pack is charged at constant current of 12.8 A (1C) to 33.6 V (cut-off voltage), then charged at constant voltage (current below 0.05C). Finally, after being left for an hour, the fully charged battery pack is discharged at different DRs.
