In the charging process we have to pass a charging current through the cell in the opposite direction to that of the discharging current. Discharging of a lead acid battery is again involved with chemical reactions. The sulfuric acid is in the diluted form with typically 3:1 ratio with water and sulfuric acid. When the loads are connected across the plates, the sulfuric acid again breaks into positive ions 2H+ and negative ions SO 4.
The lead acid battery is most commonly used in the power stations and substations because it has higher cell voltage and lower cost. The various parts of the lead acid battery are shown below. The container and the plates are the main part of the lead acid battery.
Gassing introduces several problems into a lead acid battery. Not only does the gassing of the battery raise safety concerns, due to the explosive nature of the hydrogen produced, but gassing also reduces the water in the battery, which must be manually replaced, introducing a maintenance component into the system.
The battery may also fail as an open circuit (that is, there may be a gradual increase in the internal series resistance), and any batteries connected in series with this battery will also be affected. Freezing the battery, depending on the type of lead acid battery used, may also cause irreversible failure of the battery.

For recharging, positive terminal of DC source is connected to positive terminal of the battery (anode) and negative terminal of DC source is connected to the negative terminal (cathode) of the battery.
