Phase change materials (PCMs) having a large latent heat during solid-liquid phase transition are promising for thermal energy storage applications. However, the relatively low thermal conductivity of the majority of promising PCMs (<10 W/ (m ⋅ K)) limits the power density and overall storage efficiency.
Results revealed that implementing the PCM containers increased the energy storage from 16.4 to 48.2 kJ/kg (in the case of PCM 2), while the temperature distribution was always lower during the charging, due to the smaller thermal radius of the piles.
Thermal storage requires the selection of PCMs having an optimal melting point, latent heat, and thermal conductivity based on the temperature range and heat-generation characteristics of the application.
During the sunlight charging process, the particles are attracted to the sidewall from the liquid part by the magnetic field, while the solar light directly reaches the solid–liquid interface through the transparent liquid PCMs, keeping the heat source in close contact with the melting site.
Different heat sources have a large impact on the heat storage power of PCMs, and the general trend is to increase the contact area between the heat source and the solid–liquid interface to effectively improve the heat storage power.
During the heating OFF state, the stored heat within the PCM is released and conducted out. The analysis shows that the PCM buffers heat spikes from the heat source and reduces the transient peak heat loads by 50% for the heat rejection system.
