The Commission adopted in March 2023 a list of recommendations to ensure greater deployment of energy storage, accompanied by a staff working document, providing an outlook of the EU’s current regulatory, market, and financing framework for storage and identifies barriers, opportunities and best practices for its development and deployment.

Molten salt storage requires consideration of the toxicity of the materials and difficulty of handling corrosive fluids.

The widespread deployment of energy storage requires confidence across stakeholder groups (e.g., manufacturers, regulators, insurers, and consumers) in the safety and reliability of the technology.
Risks of energy storage in new applications: Codes, standards, and testing protocols for energy storage systems tend to focus on grid-scale deployments. However, energy storage is increasingly being used in new applications such as support for EV charging stations and home back-up systems.
