An essential component of nearly every satellite is the energy storage device, which is practically equal to a battery. Consequently, an overview of past, present, and future battery technologies for CubeSats is presented. CubeSats use typically commercial off-the-shelf (COTS) batteries.
We reviewed efforts by numerous other researchers to develop (Li-ion) batteries integrated with solar cells and other technologies. Improvements in system simplicity (via voltage matching) and monolithic integration have been demonstrated over the past decade.
The use of solar panels (SP) for power supply of CubeSat is proposed. The developed technology for the production of solar arrays of the required size from solar panels has been demonstrated. The organization of incoming control of solar panels to improve reliability and achieve maximum efficiency of produced solar panels is considered.
The majority of early CubeSats used multijunction III–V photovoltaic solar cells that were body-mounted to the spacecraft. This meant that the available power depended on the size of the satellite, providing another very strong incentive to focus on higher-efficiency solar cells. Figure 9.3.
Secondary Batteries Secondary batteries are much more used than the primary batteries in CubeSats, as most of the missions have an orbital character and the cumulative energy demand over a satellite’s lifetime is much higher than the primary batteries can deliver.
The combination of using strings of cells connected in parallel, with cell protection electronics, means that our CubeSat batteries are robust, resilient and offer inherent redundancy. In addition, the use of protected parallel strings allows us to easily and safely scale the battery to meet different mission requirements.
