An inverter with battery capability works by first trying to power the home using the battery's energy. If there's any spare power, it will charge the battery. Once the battery is full, any excess power will be exported. In the evening, the inverter will use the battery to produce just enough power to meet the home's demand.
Inverters generate reactive power by use of the freewheeling diodes on each of the power switches. The inductive nature of the load makes it want to draw current even after the power switch has been turned OFF. The load is shown as an induction motor but maybe the primary of a three-phase transformer or any other AC load.
The inverter is essentially an electronic circuit that switches the DC power on and off at a high frequency, creating a pulsating current which is then filtered and smoothed to produce a pure sine wave output. The engine of an inverter generator powers a three-phase alternator, producing AC power.
The inverter switching elements must have anti-parallel diodes to carry current in the direction opposing the current from the DC supply. The current between the DC supply and capacitor combination to the H-Bridge inverter will be DC with some AC ripple current.
If you don't have a battery in the system, the inverter will always generate as much as it can. If the generation is more than the home is using, the excess will go out to the grid. If it's less, then the home will be running off a mixture of generated and grid power.
You can also buy portable inverters for your car which allow you to use the car's battery to power small household appliances. A common and fairly simple application of inverters is within photovoltaic arrays, as these generate DC power, but, the appliances in your home will use AC power so this needs to be converted for it to be of use.
