For the solar pyrolysis products gasification process, because the pyrolysis products contain a portion of the chemical energy converted from solar energy, which consequently affects the syngas yield and O 2 consumption.
To tackle these challenges, a solar–biomass hybrid gasification system is proposed for sustainable fuel production. The system employs parabolic trough and tower concentrators to generate solar heat, driving the biomass pyrolysis and pyrolysis products gasification reactions to produce bio–solar syngas.
However, the high temperature (800–1200 °C) required for gasification reactions presents challenges for solar gasification, for example, the high radiation heat loss during the solar heat collection process and the complex structure of solar concentrating systems.
The horizontal and vertical axes represent the biomass gasification system integrated with solar heat and PV–electrolysis, respectively. The upper boundary of the region represents the maximum utilization potential of renewable carbon in biomass. Fig. 4.
The gasification process for conversion of a feedstock to syngas involves high temperature, high pressure. and multiple steps, including feed processing, oxygen separation from air, and syngas clean-up. The cost of this complex process remains high despite continuing advances in technology.
Several researchers have demonstrated the technical feasibility and benefits of utilizing solar heat to drive the biomass gasification process. This approach has the potential to reduce the energy loss and CO 2 production associated with the combustion process , .
