To warm up a battery from a subzero temperature efficiently, the heat generation inside or outside the battery cell, heat conduction, and heat convection, etc., must be precisely modeled and controlled so that the temperature rise of the battery can be regulated well.
Even at that sub-zero temperature, the capacity was equivalent to that of a cell with a conventional carbonate-based electrolyte at room temperature. “Our research thus demonstrated how to tailor the atomic structure of electrolyte solvents to design new electrolytes for sub-zero temperatures,” Zhang said.
A notable phenomenon of Li-ion battery at subzero temperatures is the significantly reduced discharge capacity. At −10 °C, a 2.2 Ah 18650 cylindrical cell could only retain about 1.7 Ah discharge capacity at 1C discharge rate and less discharge capacity is obtained using a higher discharge rate (about 0.9 Ah in 4.6C) .
Since charging batteries at low temperatures is likely to incur lithium plating, batteries have to consume a proportion of their stored energy to heat themselves internally through discharging . For easy implementation, constant current discharge (CCD) and constant voltage discharge (CVD) are the two common operation protocols.
The viscosity of the electrolyte inside the power battery increases at low temperatures, which hinders the movement of charge carriers, leading to an increase in the internal impedance of the power battery, and in extreme cases, the electrolyte may even freeze.

Sub-zero weather: is there a point where the Tesla should stay …
A normal daily charge will do just fine. You lose about 25% at 0F, and if there is new fallen snow that you have to plow through it''s possible to lose another 20%. However, with new fallen snow the temperatures are likely to be above 0F. The only time I would be concerned is if the temperatures were -22F or lower.
Electric vehicle driving in sub-zero temperatures | Virta
The heating system of an electric car usually optimises the battery''s temperature for driving, but in order to charge as efficiently as possible, the battery should be warmer than that. In really cold weather, it can take a long time for the charging power to reach its maximum efficiency because the battery has to be heated first. Luckily, the ...
