ESB has opened a 75 MW/150 MWh battery plant, touted as the largest of its kind in commercial operation in Ireland. Eamon Ryan, the country’s Minister for the Environment, Climate and Communications, has said that the site will be a core part of Ireland’s renewable energy transition.
Ireland’s ESB has opened a battery energy storage system at its Poolberg site in Dublin. Operational since November, the battery plant is capable of providing 75 MW of energy for two hours to Ireland’s electricity system. It features high-capacity batteries that store excess renewable energy for discharge when required.
Cork, Ireland – ESB has today opened a major battery plant at Aghada, Co Cork, which will add 19MW (38MWh) of fast-acting energy storage to help provide grid stability and deliver more renewables on Ireland’s electricity system. The projects are ESB’s first in a pipeline to deliver grid-scale battery technology at sites in Co Cork and Dublin.
(EUR 1 = USD 1.078) Irish state-owned utility ESB on Wednesday opened a 75-MW/150-MWh battery energy storage plant, currently Ireland’s largest, at its Poolbeg site in Dublin.
Over 2.5GW of grid-scale battery storage is in development in Ireland, with six projects currently operational in the country, four of which were added in 2021.
Ireland has set a target of generating 80% renewable electricity by 2030. Deployment of battery storage will be capable of responding in milliseconds to frequency changes, importing or exporting electricity from the grid as needed, and helping efficiently stabilise the grid, while guaranteeing reliable electricity supply for users.
