Pumped storage hydropower is one of the oldest and most reliable forms of power storage. In fact, it’s been around for more than a hundred years. The first pumped storage hydropower project was developed in Switzerland in 1907, and United States (US) started bringing projects online in the 1930’s.
Proposed arrangement for combining hydropower and pumped-hydro storage. Comparison of proposed pumped-hydro storage projects in the Zambesi river basin. The energy sector is undergoing substantial transition with the integration of variable renewable energy sources, such as wind and solar energy.
The first pumped storage hydropower project was developed in Switzerland in 1907, and United States (US) started bringing projects online in the 1930’s. Today, the International Hydropower Association (IHA) estimates that pumped storage hydropower projects can store up to 9000 gigawatt hours (GWh) of electricity worldwide.
Another first was recently announced by Gilkes Energy in the UK, who released details of its planned 900MW Earba Storage Project in Scotland, the company’s first pumped storage hydropower scheme. Earba Storage Project will store up to 33,000 MWh of energy, making it the largest such scheme in the UK in terms of energy stored.
These can take years to complete from development through permitting execution and reporting. But it is also common to have an exploratory adit targeting the powerhouse where additional drilling and testing can be performed. As with any complex design, there are many challenges we face when developing pumped storage hydropower projects.
Although pumped storage hydropower (PSH) has been around for many years, the technology is still evolving. At present, many new PSH concepts and technologies are being proposed or actively researched. This study performs a landscape analysis to establish the current state of PSH technology and identify promising new concepts and innovations.

Pumped Storage Hydropower
Pumped storage hydropower (PSH) is a type of hydroelectric energy storage. It is a configuration of two water reservoirs at different elevations that can generate power as water moves down from one to the other (discharge), passing through a turbine. The system also requires power as it pumps water back into the upper reservoir (recharge). PSH acts similarly to a giant battery, …
