China's largest environmental desert control photovoltaic (PV) project in the Kubuqi desert, North China's Inner Mongolia, has connected to the grid. The 100,000-mu (6,666 hectares) project is providing clean energy for China's power grid while helping improve the environment of the desert, showing China's latest efforts at eco-development.
Upon completion, the project is expected to generate 1.78 billion kilowatt-hours of power annually – enough to meet the needs of approximately 2.67 million urban residents in China. This is equivalent to saving approximately 503,800 tonnes of standard coal and reducing carbon dioxide emissions by 1.3447 million tonnes.

PV power generation is promoting China's energy transition. From January to October this year, new PV capacity reached 143 million kilowatts, up 145 percent year-on-year, according to the National Energy Administration.
The first solar units from CHN Energy’s 1GW offshore PV project have connected to China’s energy grid. Developed by CHN Energy’s Guohua Energy Investment, the offshore PV project is located 8km off the eastern coast of the city of Dongying and spans approximately 1,223 hectares.
In a report by the Centre for Research on Energy and Clean Air, the country undertook construction on over 41GW of coal projects in the first half of this year. According to GEM’s annual survey of global coal power units, China alone accounted for two-thirds of coal-burning power capacity in 2023.
