Positive electrodes for Li-ion and lithium batteries (also termed “cathodes”) have been under intense scrutiny since the advent of the Li-ion cell in 1991. This is especially true in the past decade.
Summary and Perspectives As the energy densities, operating voltages, safety, and lifetime of Li batteries are mainly determined by electrode materials, much attention has been paid on the research of electrode materials.
Hence, the current scenario of electrode materials of Li-ion batteries can be highly promising in enhancing the battery performance making it more efficient than before. This can reduce the dependence on fossil fuels such as for example, coal for electricity production. 1. Introduction
The electrode potential of lithium metal corresponds to the average electron energy level at the top of its valence band (electron transfer energy level or redox electron energy of materials).
Lithium metal was used as a negative electrode in LiClO 4, LiBF 4, LiBr, LiI, or LiAlCl 4 dissolved in organic solvents. Positive-electrode materials were found by trial-and-error investigations of organic and inorganic materials in the 1960s.
Ultimately, the development of electrode materials is a system engineering, depending on not only material properties but also the operating conditions and the compatibility with other battery components, including electrolytes, binders, and conductive additives. The breakthroughs of electrode materials are on the way for next-generation batteries.
High-voltage positive electrode materials for lithium-ion batteries
The key to sustaining the progress in Li-ion batteries lies in the quest for safe, low-cost positive electrode (cathode) materials with desirable energy and power capabilities. One approach to boost the energy and power densities of batteries is to increase the output voltage while maintaining a high capacity, fast charge–discharge rate, and ...

How Much Lithium does a LiIon EV battery really need?
This means that a real battery will need 4 to 10 times as much active material (Lithium) per kWh as the theoretical minimum. If we look at the theoretical specific energy of a LiIon battery, the figures widely quoted are between 400 and 450 Wh/kg. The actual specific energy achieved is between 70 and 120 Wh/kg. Therefore practical LiIon ...
