The Generation 3 Concentrating Solar Power Systems (Gen3 CSP) funding program builds on prior research for high-temperature concentrating solar-thermal power (CSP) technologies.
Phase III: construction of a 70 MW solar photovoltaic (PV) power plant (NOOR Ouarzazate IV power plant). The surface areas (rights-of-way) of the power plants are: 480 ha (NOOR Ouarzazate I), 610 ha (NOOR Ouarzazate II), 583 ha (NOOR Ouarzazate III), and about 130 ha that can be extended to 230 ha (NOOR Ouarzazate IV).
Phase 1 advances the development of specific components that have been identified as key risks in an efficient, integrated system. Based on the results of Phase 1, Phase 2 focused on designing an integrated system with thermal energy storage that can withstand high temperatures.
Disbursement of AfDB and CTF/AfDB loans: The Bank's financing for the NOOR Ouarzazate III Solar Power Plant Project was approved on 3 December 2014. It consists of an AfDB loan of EUR 28,000,000 and a CTF/AfDB loan of USD 50,000,000. The related loan and guarantee agreements were signed on 19 December 2014 and become effective on that date.
ONEE, which is the national operator of the country's electricity grid and is responsible for ensuring that the national demand for electric power is met, is one of the main beneficiaries of the NOOR Ouarzazate III solar power plant project.
Project Summary: To achieve higher efficiencies, concentrating solar power plants can use the Brayton power cycle, an engine design that uses supercritical carbon dioxide (sCO 2) as a fluid to transfer heat. Current CSP plants use steam Rankine cycles, in which 35% to 42% of the collected heat is converted to electricity.
