Dai Jianfeng, a deputy chief engineer of China Electric Power Planning and Engineering Institute, said the new energy storage in China has been developed through diverse technology routes. According to him, lithium-ion battery is still dominant at present, but the development of compressed air and liquid flow battery is accelerating.
Their new energy-storage capacity in 2022 accounted for 86 percent of the global total, up 6 percentage points from 2021. The CNESA report estimated that China's cumulative installed capacity of new energy storage in 2027 may reach 138.4 gigawatts if the country's provincial-level regions achieve their targets of energy-storage construction.
Even though several reviews of energy storage technologies have been published, there are still some gaps that need to be filled, including: a) the development of energy storage in China; b) role of energy storage in different application scenarios of the power system; c) analysis and discussion on the business model of energy storage in China.
In 2021, the Chinese government set a target of 30 gigawatts (GW) of non-hydro energy storage by 2025. The country has already surpassed this initial goal, two years ahead of schedule. According to China’s National Energy Administration, the country’s overall capacity in the new-type energy storage sector reached 31.4 GW by the end of 2023.
In 2016, energy storage was included in China's 13th Five-Year Plan national strategy top 100 projects. Energy storage has officially entered the national development plan for the first time and has been identified in the 100 major engineering projects which China plans to implement in the next five years .
